With over 25 seasons each of guiding experience, Scott and Allen Edman are masters of Lake of the Woods and every one of its gamefish species. Taking a team approach to fishing, they share what they find each day and work together to keep a jump ahead of the game. Their passion for the lake and honing their fishing skills still burns as brightly as the day they started guiding.
The brothers grew up at Angle Outpost Resort on the Northwest Angle, mowing the lawn and running the marina while their dad guided the guests. Scott and Allen learned the lake while riding along with their dad, netting fish and helping the guests bait hooks. Soon they began running follow boats with him, practicing boat control and locating structure without a GPS.
At the ripe old ages of 12 and 13, the boys began guiding solo. They threaded through the islands, making Lake of the Woods their own as they gripped the tillers of their 25 horse motors. By the time they could get a driver’s license, they were already crusty veteran guides.
Some kids get cars for their high school graduation, but Allen and Scott celebrated instead by purchasing their own guide rigs! They also began to guide in the winter, running a bustling ice fishing business. The family resort sold in 1998 along with the ice fishing operation. They continued to guide for Angle Outpost and also began freelance guiding for other resorts and cabin owners.
After their family sold the resort, the brothers fished their way through college, earning teaching degrees from the University of North Dakota. Currently they guide full-time in the summer months and weekends throughout the school year.
